We are living in times of rampant corruption and authoritarianism in our country, and it’s hard not to despair. But we have a lot of hope, too. Our party is expanding as never before, and our county party is seeing unprecedented growth, as well. In Bell County, we have a candidate for Congress who has raised $1.1 million and who has a biographical video that has more than six million views. We have a real opportunity to take John Carter out in November! MJ Hegar wants to lift up all our candidates, and her field team is working closely with our down ballots, as well. This summer, we are working on coordinating campaigns, so we have the best coverage possible for canvassing and phone banking.
Every Wednesday, we are holding a Potluck Phone Bank in Belton at 2203 Red Rock Drive. This is an opportunity to huddle with your fellow Democrats and learn how to access Virtual Phone Bank. We are calling folks we need to get to the polls November 6th, and we need your help. We will train you to do this important work—it’s too easy, and it’s fun. There are a lot of people out there who are worried about the direction the country is taking, and they want to connect with us.
Every Tuesday, the Texas Democratic Party does a Facebook Live event called Training Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. These are short, informative trainings that help us do this work better. As Glen Maxey says, after fifty years and thousands of trainings, there is always more to learn. This is particularly true in these days when the political landscape is changing so quickly. Also, if you are not a member of the Facebook group, Democratic Activists of Central Texas, please ask to join. Bela Kriger, our Central Texas regional director, posts activities and trainings in her region on the page.
Last month, we had Philippa Wood, TDP’s training director, as our speaker. This month, we will look at her training for new precinct chairs, as we are onboarding a number of new chairs. If you are an experienced chair, we will invite you to speak about how you organize your precinct to share best practices.
Tomorrow will be our last CEC meeting until September 14th. Please put September 22nd on your calendar for the Bell Brunch! Hope to see you at the courthouse tomorrow and for our social at Corona’s afterwards!
